John was born in 1898 in Ohio to parents of Irish birth. He joined the Navy in 1917, served at the Naval Aeronautic Station in Pensacola, and later on the ship Huron till late in World War I. He was discharged in July 1918 from the Naval Hospital in Fort Lyon Col.
