Conrad was born in 1836 in Bavaria. After immigrating, he married Margaret in 1860. While living here on New Street (later City Park) in 1860, he was a sexton at St Mary's. he later worked as a carpenter.

A sexton is a person who looks after a church and churchyard, sometimes acting as bellringer.
